On the matchbox labels are Chinese paintings of bamboo and orchid by Zheng Banqiao, together with his Chinese calligraphy.
Zheng Banqiao (1693-1765) is a painter and calligrapher of Chinese Qing Dynasty. Bamboo and orchid paintings are both important parts of Chinese traditional painting. Chinese painters use only traditional Chinese black ink to produce different bamboos and orchids. Zheng is perhaps the most famous ancient Chinese artist in painting bamboos.
Plum, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum are called the Four Men of Honor by the Chinese.
